Topamax Side Effect: Oligohidrosis

Oligohidrosis is one of the less known possible side effects of Topamax. The condition is characterized by a lack of sweating and may result in an elevation in body temperature, called “hyperthermia.” While it does not happen often, if the Topamax user exposes himself or herself to high temperatures while taking the drug, the lack of sweating can result in serious hyperthermia and lead to a need for hospitalization.

Most reports of oligohidrosis occurred in children taking the medication during hot weather. Thus, parents of children taking Topamax should closely monitor their child for abnormal rises in body temperature when active. As long as the child is monitored for such a rise, and the parent is aware of the situations that give rise to hyperthermia, then it should not be a serious issue.

Post-market reports by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found that roughly 35 per 1,000,000 patients suffered from oligohidrosis. However, the nature of the condition is thought to cause under-reporting by those whom it affects. Less than 5% of those treated for the condition due to Topamax experienced “medically significant” oligohidrosis.

What Causes Oligohidrosis?

Oligohidrosis typically occurs due to underactivity of the sympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system is one of three parts of the autonomic nervous system and controls the body’s resources used to react to a variety of stresses. One of its most important functions is constantly working to maintain homeostasis, which includes keeping the core body temperature stable. Topamax can interfere with this function, which results in the lack of sweating and resulting hyperthermia.

Have You Been Affected By Topamax?

Topamax has been associated with much more serious side effects, namely birth defects in children born to mothers taking the drug during pregnancy. If you were prescribed Topamax during pregnancy and your child suffered Topamax side effects, then you could have a case for compensation against Ortho-McNeil. Your first step needs to be consulting with a legal professional.

The attorneys at the Rottenstein Law Group have years of experience working with clients that have been harmed by negligent corporations like Ortho-McNeil. To request a free consultation with an RLG attorney, please click here.
